PRESENTATION OF PROTEGE QV

PROTEGE QV which means Promotion of Technologies that Guarantee Environment and a better Quality of Life, is a Cameroonian NGO created in 1995, and registered in conformity with the local regulations in 1996. PROTEGE QV aims to promote individual and collective initiatives to induce rural development, to protect environment and to improve the well-being of the community. We use information (through groups discussions, documents publications and exhibitions), trainings (through workshops) and research, as vectors to implement our projects.

Four programmes are on course at PROTEGE QV: leadership, clean energy, micro-enterprise and ICT4D.

PROTEGE QV works in collaboration with government and other NGOs at national level and is an active member of some networks: Global Knowledge Partnership (GKP), Association for Progressive Communications (APC), APC-Africa Women (AAW), Community Creation Content network (C3net), FARMRADIO, AMARC, ONEWORLD RADIO, Global Village Energy Partnership (GVEP).

PROTEGE QV strongly believes in partnership and knowledge sharing as powerful drivers in poverty reduction. The improvement of ICT applications in the roles of these two drivers influenced the choice of PROTEGE QV to add ICT4D in his programs.

PROTEGE QV has a valuable experience in using ICT to reduce poverty. During the last three years,
• Through the initiative entitled "Improving rural development in the Upper Nkam division in Cameroon through open and distance training programme for rural women", winner of the Seed Grant Small Innovative Project of Global Knowledge Partnership in 2003, PROTEGE QV used open and distance training programme through radio broadcastings and videotapes, to empower rural women, by giving them the skills to be able to implement income generating activities and to practice effective local leadership;
• Another initiative entitled “Small business training for rural women in the Upper Nkam division in cameroon” realized in year 2005 received support from the Commonwealth of Learning (COL), an intergovernmental organization based in Vancouver, Canada, through its Poverty Reduction Outcomes Through Education Innovations and Networks (COL-PROTEIN) programme. The COL-PROTEIN Award was given to PROTEGE QV to support innovative uses of open and distance learning (ODL) to address poverty alleviation;
• A Computer literacy training program is executed since 2004 towards women, pupils in schools situated in disadvantaged areas and their teachers;
• In 2005, PROTEGE QV supported the creation of a group of rural women animators and trained them to be able to use internet, short messenger services (SMS) and radio programmes to be able to share information among women groups.
